This one was hard. The light was flat which allowed the green of the Naupaka to really almost glow against the juxtaposition of the flat black lava stones in front of it. So, is it a black and white picture or should I leave it in color? In the end I choose black and white because of the texture that is brought out in the lava. And when I brought out the glow of the Naupaka with an infrared filter, I figured I had the best of both worlds. So black and white it is. This is the last of the Hawaii, or rather really Kauai, in black and white series (at least until I return) and I feel like it was good as a photographer to challenge myself with this strange take on a place ultimately known for its color. Kauai is about as easy of a place to photograph as there is on earth. You can point your camera anywhere and just the color alone will produce something wall worthy. Black and white takes that advantage away, you must push form, and that means you push yourself.
