Investigations in Black and White

Tree Tunnel Pt Reyes California

I’ve always loved black and white photography, but I’ve never been good at it. I never understood how you could tell an image would be good in black and white. Color photography is way easier. To see an amazing sunset, or colorful landscape is somewhat intuitive of a great picture (just ask the instagramers). Black and white however, requires the ability to see something and in your mind’s eye translate the light, form, and composition without peeking at the LCD screen on the back of your camera. Anything I’ve produced in black and white is pure luck in photoshop with me asking myself, “…I wonder what this picture would look like if I clicked this button?” Lately, I have been making a point to ask myself whilst actually taking the picture, “I wonder what this would look like in black and white?” And then, adjusting the light, form, and composition to reflect what I think would look good in black and white. To my surprise, my art has gotten better for it whether in color or black and white.
