I begged our Austrian friends to take us there and they told me I wouldn’t like it. Despite living thousands of miles away from me they still know me very well. I hated it. Tourist trap nightmare. Lovely place overrun by people like me clamoring to get a photograph that everyone else already has. Despite the letdown for me there, it wasn’t until my son and I were in a restaurant back home in Tahoe that it occurred to me that all was not lost. Today, televisions have screen savers that might show you pictures of far off places. The television in this particular place was cycling through photographs of cities from around the world and this famous shot came up. My son said, “Dad look its Austria, we stood right there.” He was 5. When I was 5 I don’t believe I knew there was a country called Austria, and certainly had no idea I what it looked like. It still is lovely to look at, but when I see this picture, I am pleased more by the impression my boy received than the impression I took.
