“The clearest way into the Universe is through a forest wilderness.” So said John Muir. I envisioned this picture in my head ever since I made my way down the east bank of Lake Tahoe to bonsai rock 10 years ago. I was just never sober enough to drive the 45mins over to it at 1 in the morning. That is, till one August summer night. I set the alarm and pre-packed everything I would need so that getting myself out of a dead sleep would be that much easier. All I had to do was get in the car and start driving. My Star Walk app on my phone allowed me to know at approximately what time and where the Milky Way would be showing itself over the famous rock. I have photographed this rock several times but have always been disappointed with the results because the pictures looked like the other 10,000 photographers that had already been there before me. So, there I was at 2:00am standing knee deep in cold ass water trying to get my shot. Everything went well and the Milky Way showed up as promised, but I had nothing in the foreground to give any sense of depth in the photo. I then proceeded to put my thumb over my head lamp whilst shooting the 25 second exposure. That gave me the cool blueish tone over the rocks in the foreground you see before you. The satellite on the other hand, was pure luck!
