Nestled in the Provence region of France, Gordes is a must on the list for anyone visiting the south of France. An ancient commune, resistance hold out, and now artist hot spot, the town is built on top of a hill overlooking the Luberon valley and has a charm that few places can attest. I took a stroll down the narrow streets and was struck by this image that reminded me of the Van Gogh paintings. Too bad it wasn’t night as a single street light illuminated with two “Gordiens” would’ve been much better…maybe an excuse to go back one day. I lifted my camera and snapped one frame that you see here. The light was mediocre at best but the feeling I think one gets from looking at the image and perhaps the story it tells supplants the typical technicolor sunset. Images of people must tell stories since that is what the human race really is…one big story with millions of plots. That’s the trick. Tell a story with one frame. Similar to Ernest Hemmingway’s statement that you’re not a good writer unless you can tell a story in 6 words or less, “For sale: baby shoes, never worn.” The simplicity with which something complicated can be explained is what makes it elegant. The couple pictured here paid me no attention. Maybe they have been jaded by the hordes of tourists to what is undoubtedly their home town. I feel there was something more to their posture and empty stares. If I wrote the story it would be, “I’m Sorry. I had no Idea.” What would your story say? And remember, you only have 6 words.
