Titan Del Norte

Nothing beats a good ol’ fashioned treasure hunt. In this case, the treasure was one of the largest trees on earth. Called Titan Del Norte, it stands 307ft tall and about 24ft in diameter. You would think, “How hard could it be to find an enormous tree?” But, travel to Redwoods National Park or the adjoining Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park and you will quickly understand why its not so easy. The Titan was found in 1998 and the location kept a secret to protect it from being loved to death. Clues to its location where given in a book about tree hunters and the search was on. After reading the book and trying to interpret the clues of a place I had yet to visit, I recruited a cadre of fellow nature lovers, The Nimrods, to help me in finding the location of the Titan. We planned our trip in late May to correspond with the Rhododendron bloom, and set off in search of our treasure. Despite being named after one of Shackelton’s ill-fated expeditions, and being a close approximation of the average intelligence level of the modern day definition, The Nimrods proved to be astute at following clues on a map. We found the monolith tucked away off trail in a location that has since been geotagged by an individual who’s home should be geotagged so we can all go and take a dump on it. Yes, the location today has the GPS coordinates leading you right to it, and all the other Titans. The park is trying to raise $1.4 million to construct a raised pathway leading to it, similar to the paths in Muir Woods. In fact, the proceeds of this print will be directed to this fund and you can donate to it on your own here: https://www.savetheredwoods.org Speaking of the print, the image was taken on our way to finding the Titan with a 70-200mm f2 telephoto lens. I cropped it in a square format that gives it a modern juxtaposition with the delicate Rhododendron and the sturdy Redwood.
