Pienza is in the Tuscan region of Italy, and has all the photographic qualities one would expect when in Tuscany. Rolling hills, vineyards, villas, cypress groves, etc. I was there in 2007 to photograph the region and every morning as I would come back from chasing the early light, I would see three old timers sitting on a bench in the town square, deep in conversation. When I say, “deep” you have to understand how Italians communicate….a lot of hand gestures and screaming. I thought to myself what a great pic it would make, but was too shy as the town was habitually overrun with annoying tourists such as myself, and thought they would find me even more annoying as these were obviously locals who had spent their life there. I returned to Pienza in 2014, and as I came back from my first morning catching light I couldn’t believe that the same three old timers were on the same park bench 7 years later….again deep in conversation. I said to myself the hell with it, Im gonna try to get the shot. I walked up and asked to photograph them. All three posed immediately and I took 3 frames handheld. I said thank you, and they went right back to screaming and pointing at each other.
